The dialogue is brilliant and every last line is worth hearing. Immediately, you are introduced to the fantastic writing and comical tone that Portal has become known for. He quickly throws you through some training exercises, as you begin your epic journey to escape the facility. You are immediately greeted by Wheatley, voiced by Stephen Merchant. Once again, you don the longfall protective boots of Chell as you awaken in the confines of the facility after the events of the first game. Portal 2 is the Terminator 2 of gaming sequels and a must-own for anyone who enjoys a solid brain teaser. More than a few people, myself included, thought it couldn’t be done, but after spending over a dozen hours inside the halls of Aperture Science, my cynicism has been thwarted. With the sequel, Valve was tasked with justifying $60 for a sequel to a packed-in bonus. Its quirky humor and brain-bending puzzles were the stuff of legends, and it was hard to find someone who had played it that wasn’t cracking a joke about cake. The original Portal was a nice surprise packed in with a fantastic collection of shooters. It's the thinking man's game that anyone can enjoy.Welcome back to Aperture Science. "Portal 2" takes everything that was good about the first to a new level. ![]() The load times between almost every puzzle can be a bit of a buzz kill.īut that's virtually the only flaw I can find in this game. What these people can create with four portals is almost impossible to comprehend. Not only does it retain the humor, graphics and overall fun of one player, it adds an even greater challenge. Taking place after the single player, you and a friend play as two robots continuing the portal testing. Wheatley (voiced by Stephen Merchant) is a perfect bumbling sidekick who adds color to virtually every level. On top of GLaDOs' vicious, mechanical sarcasm, "Portal 2" gets a shot in the arm from two new characters, Wheatley and Cave Jonson. The only thing that might beat "Portal 2's" elite game-play is its sharp humor, which continues "Portal 1's" rich comedic undertone. In "Portal 2," I am simply dumbstruck by it.Ī combination of cubes, lasers, physics, gels, panels and many other toys creates mind-bending mazes that leave you wondering who could possibly think these up. In "Portal 1," I was stunned by how far two portals could go. Your character, Chell, is a test subject at Aperture Science testing a "portal gun." The gun creates two portals anything that goes through one comes out the other.Īfter discovering that the facility has been taken over by a murderous sociopath, the artificially intelligent GLaDOs (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), Chell makes her escape, blowing up GLaDOs and most of the facility.īut "Portal 2" finds her waking up in the crumbling test site, and when she and a bumbling AI named Wheatley attempt another escape, they inadvertently awaken GLaDOs, and Chell becomes a lab rat once again. Therefore, SOM will not decrease drastically under short cropping and short fallow rotation because recent decrease in emergent trees and increase in bush trees brought small loss of SOM during burning. However, in the semiarid region, the decrease in soil C and N stock during cropping was small with return of plant residue because long dry season constrains loss of SOM through leaching and decomposition and N 2 fixation by free-living N 2 fixation. In other regions such as Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America, soil C and N stock decreased rapidly even during short cropping, while grain yield was higher than this semiarid region. Thus, under rainfed agriculture without fertilizer in semiarid region, this type of slash and burn was relatively suitable to maintain grain yield and SOM contents although the yield and the SOM were low level compared to other regions where slash and burn is practiced. The C and N stock could not be fully recovered, especially burned spots. ![]() (3) Without burning, 2-year fallow after 3-year cropping is relatively useful management in terms of maintenance of POM, SOM, and grain yield, although woody biomass decreased compared to 2-year fallow after 1-year cropping. The results of our field study indicated the following: (1) More than 10-year cropping exhausted SOM and woody biomass SOM and woody biomass were not restored during short fallow. It is, therefore, important to elucidate the effect of the conversion to cropland and shortened fallow period on SOM for evaluation and improvement of soil fertility. Soil organic matter (SOM) is important to sustain crop productivity for famers in semiarid tropics of Africa who use little fertilizer and rely on the nutrient released from SOM. "For example, there are small traces of hydrogen in Mars' core. "It's like a puzzle in some ways," Lekic said. And the team thinks that the interior of the planet and the bombardment of space rocks across its surface may have played a key role in this evolution. The researchers think that Mars may have gradually evolved into the planet we see today transforming from a habitable environment to one hostile to life. Traces of magnetism in the crust of Mars indicates that the Red Planet did once have this magnetic shielding that would have protected the complex molecules needed for life from harsh solar radiation that would break them apart. Mars' core does not generate this protective shield, and so the planet's surface conditions are hostile to life." "The uniqueness of Earth's core allows it to generate a magnetic field that protects us from solar winds, allowing us to keep water. The end result of the formation and evolution processes can be either the generation or absence of life-sustaining conditions," UMD Associate Professor of Geology and research author, Nicholas Schmerr, explained. "You can think of it this way the properties of a planet's core can serve as a summary about how the planet formed and how it evolved dynamically over time. This could indicate that the two neighboring planets experienced different formation conditions. Earth's core has a much lower percentage of light elements implying that the core of Mars is much less dense than the core of our own planet. The team was also able to determine some of the chemical elements that compose the Martian core finding evidence of a surprisingly large proportion of light elements such as sulfur and oxygen in its innermost layer.
